Word from the Head, Katie Hill

We have enjoyed a busy week with our Open Day on Monday, our Environmental Maths Day on Thursday and a Supertato Morning for Pre-prep today.  On Monday we were delighted to welcome several families to our school for our Open Day.  It was lovely to hear their positive comments about our children, the learning environment and the ethos of our school.

This half term Miss Taswell has been impressed with the progress that Harris Class have made in Gymnastics.  This week the children were developing their climbing, swinging and jumping skills.  They worked together in groups to link the gymnastic moves to form a sequence, it was lovely to hear the constructive feedback from their peers as they worked together to refine their sequences.

Lower Cerdic have enjoyed their space learning in Science this week as they have taken part in a citizen science project.  LC were invited to take part in a competition to ask an astrophysicist some questions to identify galaxies that have been photographed by space telescopes.  The children were amazed to study photographs from deep space and discussed the features they could identify.  LC and Mrs Halford are looking forward to taking part in a webinar next week to further their learning.

We were pleased to welcome parents with Pre-school aged children to our Tiddly Peeps Toddler Group and Mini Melody Makers Sessions this week.  Mrs Orr-Ewing is looking forward to welcoming parents back again next week for the final Mini Melody Makers session of the term.

This term Harris have been studying the human skeleton in Science.  They have had fun creating bionic finger joint models, which clearly illustrate how their own finger joints work.  The children have also made jointed skeletons and have been fascinated to learn how the different joints in their bodies aid their movement.  Well done Harris!

Yesterday we were pleased to welcome St. Mary’s Primary in Thorncombe and Manor Court School for an Environmental Maths Day.  The visiting children worked with our Chard School children on workshops involving Ipad Maths challenges, tactical games and combined maths with healthy living activities on our astro pitch.  The children all refuelled with hot chocolate and doughnuts at break time!  It was great to see the children mixing and learning together on this collaborative learning day.  Thank you to Mr Sims for organising this day for all of the children.

This morning Pre-prep had great fun immersing themselves in a Supertato Morning.  The children’s excitement was ignited when Mrs Elmer came rushing into the classroom to announce that Evil Pea had mischievously stuck vegetables to the floor! Pre-prep immediately began searching the classroom for Evil Pea. Throughout the morning the Pre-prep detectives created wanted posters, superhero potatoes and rescued peas that had been trapped in ice.  The children also delighted in a puppet show performance of the story.  It was lovely to hear the children’s tales of their superhero morning at lunchtime on the playground.  Thank you to Mrs Elmer and Mrs Battersby for organising this fun immersive morning for our Pre-prep children.

Next week on Tuesday Brab Hallows, an Old Cerdic, is leading our Guest Assembly and Wyndham and Harris are taking part in a dance workshop.  On Thursday Mrs Orr-Ewing is running Mini Melody Makers for Pre-school aged children and their families and Pre-prep are performing their first performance of the ‘Wriggly Nativity’.  On Friday we have the final performance of our Pre-prep Nativity and on Saturday we are looking forward to welcoming you all to our Christmas Fair.

The Final Year

Life can be tough in your last year of primary school. Tests to take, preparing for the change to high school. Nate is ready for it all, knowing his best friend PS is at his side – they’ve been inseparable since Nursery.

But when they are put in two different classes and PS finds a new friend in Turner, the school bully, Nate’s world turns upside-down. As he struggles to make sense of this and forge new friendships, he’s dealt another blow when his youngest brother, Dylan is rushed into hospital.

His new teacher, Mr Joshua, sees a spark inside of Nate that’s lit by his love of reading and writing and shows him how to use this to process what’s going on. But with so much working against him, and anger rising inside him, will this be enough?

A powerful and lyrical story about finding your place in the world and the people that matter within it. 10+
