Word from the Head, Katie Hill

There have been many moments to celebrate in this our penultimate week of term.  On Monday UC began the week by performing their Charity Presentations in front of the whole school and their families. The UC had worked in teams to select and research a charity of their choice.  Each team then wrote a presentation about their chosen charity which they performed in Assembly on Monday.  Each team represented their charity with passion, as they worked to win the votes of their peers and staff. After the four presentations every member of the school had to cast their vote between the British Red Cross, Cat’s Protection, The Dog’s Trust and World Horse Welfare to decide which of these four charities we should support for the coming year.  The winning charity was The Dog’s Trust, congratulations to Nell S. and Lorelei L-D.  who represented this charity so well.

On Monday Wyndham were proud to display their RS learning about Buddhist Festivals from this term. The children have enjoyed creating their own Krathong for the Loy Krathong Festival.  The class learnt that during Songkran Buddhist’s have boat races and water fights.  The children were delighted to show case the Krathongs and boats that they had created.

On Wednesday we were delighted to discover that Chard School has been shortlisted for the Independent School of the Year 2023 Award.  This announcement made our whole school feel very proud and reflects the dedication and
commitment of our school community.

One of our high points of the week has been our end of year production of Beauty & The Beast.  The Cerdics and Harris all performed brilliantly, their confidence and stage presence shone through as they sang and acted their hearts out.  We couldn’t be more proud of the children and their performances on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, what super stars you all are.  We would like to thank in particular three staff members who helped to make the show such a success. Thank you to Mr Sills for directing the whole production, to Mrs Orr-Ewing for her musical direction and tuition and to Mrs Downing for the super costumes, stage design and props. Beauty & The Beast was certainly a show to remember!

Pre-prep had fun in their French lesson this week. The children took part in some fun language activities which culminated in them learning how to ask for an ice lolly in French.  This could come in useful for any future holidays to France!

We concluded the week with our Annual Prize Giving Ceremony and Concert at The Church of the Good Shepherd.  This is a high point of the school year as we come together to celebrate the achievements and progress of our children, to show case their musical talents and to wish our UC children luck as they come to the end of their Prep School journey at our school.  We were delighted that so many of you were able to join us for this event and afterwards in the School Chapel for a cream tea.

Next week we are looking forward to our Transition Mornings on Monday and Tuesday when Pre-prep and Wyndham Class will have fun with their new teachers in their new classrooms, as they prepare for the next phase of their learning in September.  On Tuesday afternoon the children are looking forward to the Prep and Pre-prep Disco, which will be a fun way for them to celebrate the end of their school year. On Wednesday we will bid our UC farewell in their Leavers Assembly before wishing all of the children a happy holiday as the school year comes to a close.

Spotlight on Modern Foreign Languages

Wyndham and Harris collaborated on a captivating exhibition where we delved into the enchanting world of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” en español

In Pre-prep session, they had the opportunity to request ice lollies, but with a twist – they had to ask for them in French!

Spotlight on Science – Religious Studies

This term Wyndham have been learning about Buddhist Festivals.  They’ve worked so hard to make their Krathong for the Loy Krathong festival.

Spotlight on Charity and Community

To mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS #NHS75 Chard School Wyndham class chose to make some cards and posters to say thank you to some of the hardworking NHS staff.

Congratulations to all of our UC who had prepared and delivered passionate speeches representing their chosen charities.

Summer meet-ups

Please find below a list of summer meet-ups for those who’d like a Wednesday activity with other Chard School children. The idea is that you turn up at 10.30, pay your own way (if necessary) and bring/buy your own lunch etc

There is no registering, no-one’s in charge, it’s simply a ‘turn up if you fancy it’ and have some adult-chat while the kids enjoy themselves!! Perfect for new starters to meet some other children before September. Friends and family welcome.

OLD CERDICS ASSOCIATION

Many congratulation to everyone at Chard School, from the President and members of the Old Cerdics Association, on the announcement that ‘our’ school has been short-listed for the Independent School of the Year 2023 award. Richly deserved no doubt and a real testament to all the hard work and dedication of all involved. A fitting way to end yet another academic year for the School.

And, a warm welcome to the OCA to all those leaving at the end of this term and joining our ranks. Good luck in your new school as you move on to secondary education. We look forward to hearing from you as the years progress.
