Word from the Head, Katie Hill

The children have been engrossed in their learning this week, I was particularly delighted to see the pattern making from Wyndham and Harris in Art.  On Tuesday our Cerdic children were excited to be invited to participate in a dance workshop with Kelly Leigh from Holyrood Academy. The children enjoyed the dance session greatly and came back eager to demonstrate their new moves on the school playground!

This half term Wyndham and Harris have been exploring pattern in Art.  This week the children cleverly created a pattern that could be split and shuffled to create new ones. These patterns will then be scaled up, replicating the techniques involved in textile and wallpaper design.  We cannot wait to see the children’s finished designs!

On Thursday Mrs Orr-Ewing was pleased to run her first Mini Melody Makers session of the term for Pre-school children and their families.  She was delighted to welcome two new families to the session this week and lots of fun with music making and movement could be heard ringing out of our Stringfellow Room.

This week in Symes our theme has been electricity and renewable energy. The children explored what we can use electricity for, where it comes from and how it is made. We watched a film clip about how power stations create electricity and then discovered how renewable energy can be generated.  The children were fascinated to see wind turbines and solar panels in action.  Mrs Halford constructed some circuits so that the children could explore the flow of electricity.  Symes certainly had a lot of fun with this experiment!

This half term Monmouth have been extending their knowledge of money in maths.  The children were excited to apply these skills at The Card Factory in Chard with Mrs Elmer.  The children enthusiastically selected their own thank you card and carefully counted out the exact payment for their card, they soon realised that they could use different coins to make the desired total.  Mrs Elmer was delighted to hear one of the children explaining at the till, that they wouldn’t need any change as this was the “…right money!”  Well done Monmouth Class!

Tomorrow our FOCS are holding our first Nearly New Baby and Children’s Clothes and Toy Sale in the Chapel and School Gym.  Do come along to grab yourself a bargain, refreshments are available and face painting too. This promises to be another successful community event.

Next week on Tuesday we are looking forward to welcoming the author Sue Docket and Howard Bailey from Chard Museum to lead our Guest Assembly.  On Wednesday Kate Edwards is running a cobb building workshop for Horner and Monmouth to link in with our termly theme of ‘Going Green’ and on Thursday Mrs Orr-Ewing is holding Mini Melody Makers for Pre-school aged children and their families.

Mr Sills book recommendation

The Wolves in the Walls

When Lucy hears noises from behind the wall she tries to warn her parents that there are wolves banging about. But her parents don’t listen. When the wolves finally take over the house and Lucy and her family are evicted to live in the garden, her parents realise perhaps they should have listened. But Lucy is no shrinking violet and pretty soon she has the wolves out and the family back in the house. So what was that noise Lucy heard coming from behind the wall? 6+

Old Cerdics Association

It is with sadness we have to place on record the passing of one of our members John Helliar. John was a pupil at Chard School from 1950 – 1957. He devoted his entire life to farming and left school at the age of 15 after the early death of his father so he could help his sister run the farm. He was a member of many clubs, largely associated with farming, and was well respected within the farming community and local district. He will be sorely missed. A full obituary will be included in the next issue of the Old Cerdics News Letter. May he rest in peace.
