Word from the Head, Katie Hill

The children have worked hard in their learning this week and have managed some time outside at play despite the weather!  This half term LC and UC have been learning about our universe. The children individually created a scaled down representation of the solar system and are working collaboratively to construct a larger scale model in the Science Lab.  The Cerdics are excited to discover more about space exploration and to begin to hypothesise what might happen in the future.  We are looking forward to seeing the children’s homework space presentations later this term.  Good luck with these Cerdics!

We were proud of our Prep School children who all competed in the Area Cross Country Championships at Holyrood on Tuesday.  In difficult conditions with a saturated course and a great deal of mud underfoot the children battled hard and Miss Taswell was delighted that Clara M. finished in 2nd place in her race.  Congratulations also go to Mary S., Emily W., Roya dH., Iggy s., Joseph S. and Pip G. who finished within the top 10 in their respective races.  A huge well done to all of the children for their effort and determination in such wet running conditions.

We were pleased to welcome parents with Pre-school aged children to our Tiddly Peeps Toddler Group and Mini Melody Makers Sessions this week.  Mrs Battersby and Mrs Orr-Ewing are looking forward to welcoming parents back again next week when they have got more play based and musical activities planned.

Lower Cerdic were motivated in Maths this week as they used chocolate bars to calculate fractions.  The children’s fraction skills were tested as they used the yummy bars to explore fractions of amounts and to calculate equivalent fractions.  I wonder what fraction of the bars you were allowed to sample at the end of the lesson?!

Mrs Elmer has been really impressed with the progress that Horner and Monmouth have made in their handwriting this week.  The children have been focusing on perfecting their letter formation and their precision and determination has been a delight to see.  Mrs Elmer has never taught a class before who are so committed to practising their handwriting, keep up the good work Horner and Monmouth!

This morning our Pre-prep children arrived at school in their Forest School clothes eager to board the bus for ROAM.  We know that the ROAM team have planned another fun filled day for the children and cannot wait to see their reactions to some of the activities that await them in the woods!  We look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return later today.

Next week on Monday we are looking forward to welcoming prospective families to our school for our Open Morning, we hope the sun is shining! On Tuesday Father Julian Laurence is leading our Guest Assembly. On Wednesday Mrs Battersby will welcome Pre-school aged children and their families to our ‘Tiddly Peeps Toddler Group’.  On Thursday Mrs Orr-Ewing is running Mini Melody Makers for Pre-school aged children and their families and on Friday FOCS have organised a Mufti Day for the children, when they are encouraged to bring in a chocolate donation for the Christmas Fair in return for wearing their own clothes.

Ten Word Tiny Tales
Is it possible to spin a tale using just ten words? It most certainly is! In this unique and magnificent compendium designed to spark the imagination, Joseph Coelho brings us stories of underwater worlds, demon hamsters, bears in outer space, and portals to places unknown … all in just ten words! Each tale has been paired with one of the finest illustrators working today – and, together, the words and pictures will create a space for creativity as young readers imagine how the story might unravel. They might even be inspired to pen a ten word tiny tale of their own! 7+
