Visit from Butterfly Conservation

Megan Lowe, from Butterfly Conservation, came to Chard School with a moth trap that she had set the previous night. The children gazed in wonder as more and more varied species appeared from inside the egg boxes in the trap. They were particularly fortunate to see our largest native species – the Privet Hawk Moth – as well as the equally stunning Elephant Hawk Moth, both sporting brilliant pink colours!

The children were able to handle (gently!) the moths and identify a wide spectrum of species, from the cartoon Spectacled Moth to the dazzling Emerald Moth, the stick-like Buff Tip to the speckled Peppered Moth. Next year we hope to take the children to Ham Hill with Butterfly Conservation, to look at the wonderful butterflies that can be found on the chalk grasslands.
